Derek Lam Parts Ways with Tod’s

Derek Lam has left his post as creative director at Tod's.

The San Francisco-born designer joined the brand in 2006, one year after he first created a capsule collection for Tod's, but according to WWD his fall collection, presented during Milan Fashion Week last month, was his last for the Italian leather goods house.

While it is understood that his Tod's contract would have been up in September, it is unclear why Derek has left the company six months early.

Speaking on his appointment to the company in 2006, Derek revealed his hopes to inject a "sense of youthfulness" into the brand: "I think it was a matter of being comfortable with how each of us, as individuals, work - getting more familiar with what the Tod's world is and spending much time with Diego [Della Valle, Tod's chairman and chief executive officer] and understanding his vision for the brand going forward. I hope to inject a sense of youthfulness and new ideas with fabrics and colors. I have a strong point of view about what a customer wants from a luxury brand: It has to be witty, unpretentious and stand or the heritage of beautifully made product."

First Look: Derek Lam Spring/Summer ‘10 Campaign

Model Ginta Lapina seems to be fashion designer Derek Lam’s muse as of late—first was her runway appearance for his Spring/Summer ‘10 collection, then she showed up on his arm to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards last week. Now it would appear as if she’s starring in the ad campaign for the aforementioned range!

“We went back to the beach, but it’s a dreamy world of cream-colored sand, highlighted by pops of color from vibrant clothing and accessories,” Creative Director Doug Lloyd said of the photo shoot.

Shot by Solve Sundsbo at Pier 59 Studio in New York, Lapina looks perfect strewn across the sandy beach in Lam’s fun polka dot print; her updo and make-up further accent the modern take on the 60’s-esque line. If only we, too, could be staring into the dreamy eyes of her onlooker!

Designer Phillip Lim had quite a tongue-twisting way of describing his collection: “It is about the mystery woman. Us as voyeurs, us being curious as who this woman is and how she goes on about her life, from day to night, weekend to weekday. And it starts with the idea of deconstructing construction to reconstructed.”

Vera Wang Makes a Trip to Sesame Street

Sesame Street may be nearing 40, but the show clearly hasn’t gone out of style.

The PBS program has already played host to a long list of actors, musicians and even First Ladies. Now the famous address is serving as a temporary runway for some of fashion’s latest designs.

For the September 2009 edition of Harper’s Bazaar, a number of designers showcase their creations with help from a few of the street’s most colorful characters. In addition to Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta (seen after the jump), Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg and Derek Lam join the fun.
